HogsHead Cafe

We visited Hogshead Café last Saturday in their new location. We knew we would have to wait, which we did no problem, about 30-40 mins for a table for 6. Our waitress was very nice and we ordered our food. We waited for an hour and ten minutes for our food. When our food was delivered, there were smaller portions then what we remembered from Hogshead and our sweet potato fries were cold and chewy. We all ordered BBQ sandwiches/plates. The waitress explained that they were in a new larger location and cooks/wait staff could not handle the expanded crowd. If that was the case, why didn't they hire more people to accommodate a larger restaurant before they opened. We will not be coming back anytime soon, until they can accommodate a larger restaurant. We wasted a lot of time and money. Hopefully they can recover and go back to the Hogshead we remember!

This place is a hidden gem! EVERYTHING we have eaten here is fantastic! Best onion rings we have ever tried(and that’s from 6 states!!) I only wish they had better soft drinks(coke😉). But the Lime Aid was fantastic! This place is a must try!

This place is a diamond in the rough. It's a cute coze place with great food. I had a 1/2 rack of ribs and some pulled pork. It was amazing!! The BBQ sauce they have on the table was a great addition to the meal. It's a nice quiet place tucked out of the way. It looked a little strange from the out side. But on the inside it had great Southern Charm. They do have limited seating, but thankfully their was no wait when I got there around 7. There was a wait stating around 7:45 so get there early !

Friendly service, well prepared food, and generous portions make this a must if you are in the mood for bbq.

I live in Norfolk but this BBQ restaurant is more than worth the drive. I come every few months.

Overall a positive quick in and out lunch experience but $16 for what amounted to 5oz of pulled pork on a plate with 2 oz glass of baked beans and some sweet potato fries. Not a great value for money, I was actually kind of shocked. I get better elsewhere when it comes to BBQ near W Broad - Try Mission BBQ instead.

customer service is superb. food is average. mac and cheese tasted like it was out of a can. oysters were rather salty, otherwise good. my grilled chicken sandwich was VERY dry. otherwise it was good. the bacon on my sandwich WAS AMAZING. fried apples were probably canned, but good. sweet potato fries and dipping sauce was GREAT!Can't wait to try their bbq.

The Big Boner! 1/2 pound hotdog with pulled pork and BBQ ribs topped with coleslaw. How could it get any better? Oh, by adding great service. Really though, the food is great, the service is pleasant and the atmosphere is fun. This is a great place to eat. BBQ is not my first choice but I will be returning for sure.

This place has THE BEST BBQ in Richmond. Food is excellent. Homemade sides are like grandma's cooking. Go hungry

A little hole in the wall BUT they have really good food!! Perfectly seasoned. Huge portions and reasonably priced with fast service. My husband said his ribs were the best he's ever eaten.

A great addition to all the BBQ joints here in Richmond. Small place, with BBQ, which packs a lot of flavor. Their Hot Wings will bring sweat to the Brow. I asked for Nuclear Hot, and they were JUST that. A must to try, and when you do... You will be returning.

O.....M....G!!!! I TALK ABOUT THIS PLACE TO EVERYONE!!!! This place is a joke in the wall that I would have never came to if I wasn't starving. Thank God I was. Lol! The barbecue was unbelievable and the banana pudding was some of the best I've ever had. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!

Charming, tasty and a true gem are just a few words of praise for this little place with big heart and a flavorful menu. The hush puppies are wonderful, crusty on the outside, soft and delicious on the inside (try them with their vinegar sauce). The pulled pork dinner is succulent and full of slow roasted flavor. You can’t explore their menu and daily specials in one sitting and I plan to be back here each time I’m in town. This place is truly special and deserves your business.

food is great ! Expect to wait one and half hours and staff isn’t very nice and will likely go out of business within 2 yrs! Sad because food is solid but no chance they handle a second floor unless get better staff

This is by far the best bbq in the land! I moved to Florida and miss this place so much! The sweet potato fries and the sauce! OMG! To die for!

Had dinner there tonight. I am on a low carb diet. We ordered byo burger with a side salad no bread no croutons. I piled the perfectly cooked cheese burger with may mustard pickles mushrooms bacon the remains of the side salad (mostly tomatoes and onions. Then added a tub of their delicious blue cheese dressing. It was.sooooo good. I really had no pangs for the bun. I told them they should add to the menu as a keto burger optio. The wings and pork wings were excellent as well I will be back.

I moved from Richmond a couple years ago this is the only restaurant that I really miss. I was in town this week and stop by the new location and had an amazing lunch. I have never had anything on the menu that was not perfect. The barbecue is great but so are the other items that are typically on a barbecue restaurants menu. All of the tacos are amazing. If you ever get the chance to try the lobster tacos when they have them you will never look at tacos any other way again.I only get to Richmond about three or four times a year but I make sure that this is one of my stops. This is one of the few times that I would get more than five stars if I had a choice.

Amazing food and service. We good "good sandwich " and they popped up. Thank god we went. Holy smokes was it off the chain good. Super people, super food, and super prices.

HOMEMADE WITH LOVE! Hogshead is one of the best places you could ever go to eat! The BBQ is delicious as are the sauces on the table. There are many dishes other than BBQ: seafood, hot dogs, steak sub, nachos, bisques, etc. You can choose from the standard menu or the chalkboard dailies As good as the BBQ is, the sides are SOOOO good it’s hard to choose—baked beans, mac n cheese, butter beans, broccoli and squash bakes, onion rings, wedge salad, and more. Homemade limeades! And of course the desserts are killer too. Best dessert ever—the pineapple upside down cake! While Hogshead is pricey, it’s the cost of having home cookin’ skillfully crafted for flavor and quality. Worth every dime! It’s a small place and can be very busy but it’s absolutely worth venturing out to try. GO! You’ll be a fan!

I like their candied yams. Other than that its nothing else here I really like. Every time I go here to eat I pick up A very obvious feeling of subtle racism. The servers show enough of it every time they have taken my order.

The food is just okay. I had a fried pickle as an appetizer and the breading was a little thick. I got their pulled pork Cuban as my main course and everything was good except the pulled pork... which is supposed to be one of their staples. It was really, really dry. Also, their prices are pretty high for a barbecue joint. I ordered their corn pudding and it had an inch of water/some sort of liquid at the bottom. I will say that their long island is very strong - definitely pushed the place up from 2 stars to 3. If you have the time and don't want to spend as much money for bbq, just drive to Alamo downtown. Nothing is comparable to it in Richmond.

Best Rubin I have ever had, and I grew up in Philadelphia so I have had lots of them.

Everything was delicious right down to the lemonade. Our waitress was fabulous.

Wonderful service. Food was great. The amount you get for what you pay for is amazing. I am honestly full off of a starter. The restaurant was clean & the staff was friendly. I would definitely recommend.

Been a fan for years. Love that their moving to old Havana 59 location in gold gym plaza. Bigger will definitely mean better.

This place was good and unique. I got the dog with pork and ribs on it so that I could taste a little of everything. The ribs were decent but still had some unrendered fat. The pork needed a sauce, but the sauces on the table were GREAT! Bacon-wrapped beef dog was as you would expect, nothing special.I will be back when in the area, but wouldn't drive access town for it.

Good chicken BBQ. The brisket was a little dry. It was later in the day. I'll give them another try when I return.

Quite pricey for what was served. I had the pulled pork with beer batter onion rings and baked broccoli . it was quite obvious that the BBQ wasn't smoked (I consider this a culinary sin). The broccoli was fair at best as were the onion rings. Certainly priced higher than it should have been.

Staff was kind and service was fast despite being packed. Their fried shrimp was delicious and the mac n cheese was on point. I would, however, like to see more veggies on their sides list. All they have are salads and collard greens. Other than that the place is a great little hole in the wall restaurant. I've been here a year and never knew it was there.

Overall, experience was excellent. The place is rather small, so there was a short wait outside. Once we were seated, the waitress was very friendly. They have a nice variety of items to choose from. Loved their BBQ, corn pudding and hush puppies. The squash bake was also delicious as well. I took my family and everyone enjoyed their meal. Looking forward to going back and trying some of the other items on the menu. UPDATE: Had to wait twice as long to be seated but the food is still delicious! UPDATE: Tried the brisket on my most recent visit. Haven't had meat that was this tender and buttery in a long time. Everything still delicious and now they have call ahead seating! (May 2018) UPDATE: Catfish Tacos were excellent. Still 5 stars! (Oct '19).

Love the Hog Dog! What a great combo! I always enjoy the squash bake!
